    If you are going to learn mostly by audio and you are not going to stay long-term in Japan, then you don't have to worry about learning kana and kanji. It would be a whole different ball game if I planned on spending time in Japan or wanted to read Japanese literature.

    The Japanese language had no written form at the time Chinese characters were introduced, and texts were written and read only in Chinese. I don't see why not. Learn more. Passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test is also required to attend Japanese universities—so there can be a lot of pressure to do well on this vital exam!
